Let's call our baby... Baby!

If you looked at the forum section of yesterday's Sunday Times, you may have noticed what I noticed: someone who wrote in was named "Baby Law".

What kind of a name is that?! She (or even worse, he) must have had extremely unimaginative parents. And lack of foresight to boot! Can you imagine what could have happened in the delivery room?

Mother: See our baby! So cute! What shall we call our baby?

Father: What to call our baby ah... *thinks long and hard* We call her Baby lor Law!

What a tragedy to be named Baby, along with the surname Law. Naming one's kid Baby is like me naming my dog Dog. My younger brother actually wanted to do that. "Let's call the dog Dog lah! Then easier to call." -.-

But it would be even worse if it was one of those self-bestowed names. A grown woman (or man) with an identity crisis, who has hated her (or his) name since infancy, decided to register herself (or himself) as Baby... Cannot be right. Who will do such an absurd thing? Who will name themselves "Baby"? People call their lovers Baby, or any other kind of demeaning, belittling names, or confectionary (sweetie), or baked products (cheesecake) or young animal (bunny) or a combination of all three (honey bunny pie).

But no one will call themselves Baby.
